Where is my data stored?

Entirely on your device, encrypted with iOS Keychain or Android Keystore. We have no cloud server holding your documents. If your phone is lost, our zero-knowledge recovery restores from your encrypted social-recovery shards.

What happens to my vault if I pass away?

You designate nominees and a dead-man's-switch window (7-180 days of inactivity). After verified inactivity, sealed envelopes are released to your nominees with full audit trail.

Does this work offline during a disaster?

Yes. The entire vault, medical profile, evacuation plan, contacts and protocols are stored on-device. Smarana works in airplane mode, in tunnels, and during network blackouts.

Is Smarana legal as proof of identity?

Official ID imports keep government validity where supported. High-quality scans help hospitals, airlines, and institutions verify you faster in an emergency — always carry originals when required.

In most families, one person quietly carries everything — every policy number, every account detail, every password. When that person can't, everything falls apart. Prateek lived this in 2014 when his father fell seriously ill. What followed wasn't just a medical emergency. It was a document emergency.

He and co-founder Saurabh Dixit — both IT professionals with 15+ years in banking and retail tech — built Smarana so no family ever has to scramble in their worst moment. What started as a personal fix became an app for every family, everywhere in the world.

It started with a phone call no one is ever ready for.

2014 · The emergency

In 2014, Prateek Srivastava's father fell seriously ill. What followed wasn't just a medical emergency — it was a document emergency. Insurance policies buried in drawers. Claim forms that needed information nobody could find. Account details, medical history, policy numbers — all locked in his father's head, because in most families, one person quietly carries everything.

The wake-up call

That's when Prateek realised something uncomfortable: his father wasn't just the family's backbone. He was the family's hard drive.

The strain

As his father's health became unpredictable, the cracks grew wider. Bills that weren't tracked. Investments nobody knew existed. A lifetime of carefully managed responsibilities — suddenly unmanageable, because none of it was written down anywhere anyone could find.

Searching for a fix

Prateek started doing what any problem-solver does. He organised. Spreadsheets. Folders. Notes apps. Anything to bring order to the chaos. But nothing was built for this. Nothing was designed to hold a family's entire critical life — securely, simply, and ready at a moment's notice.

2018–2022 · Life keeps moving

Then life kept moving.

In 2018 he got married. In 2022 he moved abroad. Suddenly it wasn't one family to manage — it was two. Not one country's documents — but multiple. Not one set of insurance policies, medical records, and financial accounts — but an entire web of them, spanning borders, time zones, and two sets of ageing parents back home.

And through it all, one feeling never left: What if something happens tonight and we're not ready?

That fear is what Prateek and his co-founder Saurabh Dixit — both IT professionals with over 15 years of experience across banking and retail — decided to build against. Not just for themselves. For every family quietly carrying the same weight.
